Meet the Locals: Animals of the Mackenzie High Country

From friendly farm animals to iconic Merino sheep, get to know the creatures who call our land home.

Farming is in our blood — and so are the animals. At Mt Hay and Balmoral Stations, we raise thousands of sheep and cattle, along with horses, alpacas, chickens, and the animals in our petting zoo. Whether you’re here for a tour or staying overnight, you’re never far from a curious alpaca or a loyal farm dog.

Merino Sheep — The Stars of the Station

Our Merino flock are central to our farming operation. Known for their ultra-fine wool, these hardy sheep thrive in the high country environment. Guests are often fascinated to learn about how their wool is harvested and where it ends up — often in luxury garments around the world.

Angus Cattle & Farm Horses

Our Angus cattle are grass-fed, high-welfare animals, and are a key part of our carbon-positive approach. We also keep a team of station horses — both working and for trekking — and they’re popular with guests on riding tours.

Family-Friendly Petting Zoo

Perfect for kids (and the young at heart), our petting zoo is home to goats, rabbits, chickens, and other friendly animals. It’s a hands-on way for families to connect with nature and learn about life on a farm.

Sustainability and Animal Welfare

All our animals are cared for with the highest welfare standards. We’re proud to be a Living Wage employer and take our responsibility to both people and animals seriously.
